Mitsubishi has revealed the first information and design sketches of the Concept-RA, a dynamic coupe that features an aluminum space frame and a diesel powertrain. It debuts at the 2008 Detroit Motor Show.
Developed by Mitsubishi Motors North America Inc. (MMNA, based in Cypress California), the Concept-RA is aimed at combining dynamic performances and environmental responsibility.
It is powered by a low-emissions 2.2-liter 4-cylinder DOHC 16-valve turbodiesel engine that delivers a maximum output of 150 kW (204 PS) and a maximum torque of 420 Nm (42.8 kg-m).
The body structure uses an aluminum space frame made of extruded sections and die-cast aluminum members.

The hood, fenders and other outer panels are made of high impact-resistance and easily recyclable plastic resin.
The driveline is based on the system used on the Lancer Evolution that includes Super All Wheel Control (S-AWC) vehicle dynamics control, the Twin Clutch SST automated manual transmission, ACD (Active Center Differential), AYC (Active Yaw Control), Sport-ABS and ASC.
Among the additional electronic controls are Active Steering and Active Damping.

The engine is equipped with MIVEC continuously variable valve timing control, with a piezoelectric injector common-rail direct fuel injection that allows a lower compression ratio and with a VD (Variable Diffuser)/VG (Variable Geometry) turbocharger.
Coupled with the engine is a new catalytic converter system that brings together diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), NOx trap catalyst (NTC) and diesel particulate filter (DPF) technologies.
As a result, the Concept-RA is compliant with U.S. emissions standards (Tier 2 Bin 5 emission regulations).
